The illicit trafficking of animals is considered the third largest illegal trade behind drug trafficking and arms trafficking with a market of about 15 billion euros per year.
Trafficking of protected species is estimated from 5 to 20 billion per year according to the United States Congress, the World Customs Organization situated this traffic in 2002 to 6 billion euros, the National Hunting Office and wildlife suggests a figure of 160 billion euros per year for all animals: these disparate figures reveal the difficulty of estimating the activity which concerns more animal parts (bones / penis / blood … lions and tigers, reptile skins, rhino horn, ivory, shark fin, abalone). The animal trafficking threatens the biodiversity of the planet, including its impact on large mammals.
